About
In October ‘09 I was given two mares. Their current owner, M, had been having health problems and couldn’t take care of them anymore. Prior to her getting them, both horses had been neglected.
Emma is my 13yo thoroughbred mare. She can be a little bossy and a lot stubborn. Apparently prior to injuring her hind leg, she was used to teach beginners and children to ride.
Belle is my 8yo thoroughbred mare. I don’t have a good deal of history on her, although she is very sweet natured. She can be a little skittish sometimes, although she will follow me around the paddock just to double check I’m not hiding carrots anywhere.
M had had Emma for almost 4 years, although Emma had been back to her prior owners recently and had a hard time of it, ending up with a dead foal and a kidney infection. M discovered her condition and took her back, getting her much needed veterinary treatment and building her health back up. Emma was lucky to survive. Without M, she wouldn’t have.
Belle was an ex-racer who had been retired after not doing very well. I’ve got no idea where she spent her time in between 2005 (her last race on record I can find) and coming to my house. M who gave me the horses had only had her for 4 weeks.
When they arrived at my place, Emma was in okay condition, but Belle was pretty skinny. Their diet at the moment consists of mostly grass, with a hard feed of chaff and horse pellets at dinner time. When the grass gets down a little more, we’ll begin supplementing with hay also.
This site is a record of their time here with me (which will hopefully be forever now) and what I do with them in order to school them. Both horses are broken in, although neither of them has been ridden regularly for a while. I’m hoping to be able to ride the both of them in the near future, as well as teach my partner (Nathan) and children to ride.
For anyone interested, Emma’s registered racing name is Cambrai and Belle’s registered racing name is Pop the Balloon. From the records I’ve seen, it appears that Belle did okay as a filly, making her owners about 10k, but didn’t do much good after that.
I haven’t had horses since I was a child, so as much as the mares are re-learning, I am too.
