So today, I bit the bullet and bought a bunch of star pickets (at $7.50 each, gah) so that we can start separating up the paddock. I also bought the insulator clips so that we can run the (thankfully given to us for nothing) hot tape through the pickets.
I didn’t however, buy picket caps. And no, before you yell at me, I’m NOT planning on leaving naked star pickets all over the paddock, begging the mares to impale themselves. I’m not, okay? But I figure, I’ve got a few old sheets here, I’ve got duct tape (long live duct tape!) and I’m pretty sure I can rig up my own caps, with just a little bit of effort.
Hell, the paddock has a 2ft spike poking out of the middle of it that was an old drain, I’ve wrapped that in sheets and taped them down and you couldn’t hurt yourself on that if you tried.
Well maybe you could, if you threw yourself over it.
And landed wrong.
It would be kind of like tripping over a pool noodle though.
It’s not dangerous is what I’m saying.
So tomorrow’s plan is to start picketing the paddock into quarters. That will allow me enough room for both mares to gaze and for us to rotate the grass they’re on.
Plus, it means I can separate them so I can actually get some work done with Emma, without Belle trying to stick her nose up Emma’s bum, threatening to get us both kicked.
Anyway.
Tomorrow should be fun.

Sounds great hun, well done you!
Horses are gifted klutz, but that said, they generally stay well away from hot wire around here – they have no caps on the poles. Frankly I stay away from it too. I got one shock and I’m STILL not over it.
Course there’s always one horse that thinks it’s a good scratching post.
Sounds like a plan! We do rotational grazing with electric tape between internal pastures, and it works well.
